Pearlstine Distributors, the company’s employees and the Pearlstine
family have always been generous supporters of worthwhile community efforts. Gifts
of money, time and effort have touched every aspect of community life from the
arts, environment, religion, education and human needs to public and private social-issue
charities.
For example, in 1935 the Pearlstine family donated now-priceless land in Charleston’s
historic district for the reconstruction of the famous Dock Street Theater. Edwin
Pearlstine Sr. was a founder of the city’s Jewish Community Center, and
his brother Milton Pearlstine was a founding member of the State Ports Authority.
The Pearlstine family and business have supported select groups like the YWCA,
United Way, NAACP, Junior Achievement, United Negro College Fund, Ronald McDonald
House, Ducks Unlimited and many others. In addition to the family fund grants,
the company itself supports a variety of local community efforts, and the individual
members of the family have a history of generous giving to worthwhile projects.
Perhaps the most unique aspect of Pearlstine Distributors and Pearlstine family
community support is the design of the new company headquarters. With large conference
and hospitality spaces, the building is intended to double as a donated meeting
site for governmental groups, civic clubs and charitable organizations –
a kind of merger between private enterprise and public/non-profit activities.
In every way, Pearlstine Distributors is building its profile as a force for
community progress and a corporate citizen committed to fairness and opportunity.
